It was fashionable for the Clergy (especially if Regulars, Monks, or Friars) to have their ‘surnames’ (for Syr-names they were not) or upper names, because superadded to those given at the Font, from the places of their Nativity … Hence it is that in such cases we seldom charge our margin with other Authors, their ‘Sirname’ being Author enough to avow their births therein.
